I am excited for this! My family has a long line of neurodivergence and substance abuse. That is definitely an under researched connection. I'm not sure I know anyone who is neurodivergent and either 1) Has struggled with addiction and/or 2) Is extremely strick in their exposure to and consumption of addictive substance.
You might be interested to know that I actually wrote a book on being an Autistic addict called “Unusual Medicine”. I've been actively writing about autism and substance use for the better part of a decade 😊
I look forward to diving into your work! I'm a recent grad but did my life backwards so my academic work is pretty recent and my kids nearly grown. Using life experience in creative nonfiction led to me to just creating nonfiction articles. Now I'm tumbling down into the inevitable reanalysis of my life with knowledge as I do EMDR therapy. Just absolutely fascinating stuff!
Sorry for multiple notes! The medication merry go round. The stereo typing by “professionals.” I relate deeply on the authoritarians in our field. They don’t believe the client which is a huge problem. Like you said, put you a whole extra year that was not necessary. They have an immediate distrust rather than taking the other opposite view, just as easily obtained, which is let’s hear the clients scientific research they’ve done. These inexperienced heads are clouded with who knows what? The anti medicationer, the narcissist, the sociopath….PLEASE let us talk and you listen and I can wrap this up in 15 minutes! Please TRUST ME!
As for me I remember saying “I just drink bud light.” Just Bud Light kicked my ass as any crack or meth user. I treated manic depression with alcohol. I’m about 15 years sober. For transparency I’ve drank a handful of times when it sounded so good and each time dumped it or gave it to someone else. I’ve NEVER been drunk since 2009.
I’ve learned about Neurobrhavioral treatment model for Substance Abuse when I worked as an admin and research assistant @ The Matrix Center in the late 80s to early 90s under the direction of the founder Richard Rawson, Ph.D. He sold his model eventually and now he does ALL kinds of things including UCLA adjunct prof and advisor/consultant to the US government. And he’s a very cool guy and has earned my bragging! He was on the front lines in the 60s with new meds for heroin addiction. Check him out. You might even collab! Thanks for your insights and being here. 💜
